Commissioner of Social Security Shares Update about COVID-19 Economic Impact Payments for Beneficiaries

“I want to provide an update to people who receive benefits from the Social Security Administration.

The Department of the Treasury (Treasury) announced on April 1 that Social Security beneficiaries who are not typically required to file tax returns will not need to file an abbreviated tax return to receive an economic impact payment. The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) will use the information on the Form SSA-1099 to generate $1,200 economic impact payments to Social Security beneficiaries who did not file tax returns in 2018 or 2019.

Treasury, not Social Security, will make automatic payments to Social Security beneficiaries. Beneficiaries will receive these payments by direct deposit or by paper check, just as they would normally receive their Social Security benefits.

For updates from the IRS, visit their web page.

Note for Supplemental Security Income (SSI) Recipients:

We are working closely with Treasury to address outstanding questions about our SSI recipients in an attempt to make the issuance of economic impact payments as quick and efficient as possible. We realize people are concerned, and the IRS will provide additional information on their web page when available. Please note that we will not consider economic impact payments as income for SSI recipients, and the payments are excluded from resources for 12 months.”

If I received an overpayment notice for 2020, Would it be due to receiving the Stimulus check? I had no income other than SSI Widow/dependent benefits in 2020.

Why are the people who are receiving unemployment insurance during the pandemic. The extra $600 and $300 is being used as extra income and now you have to pay back money. The pandemic was natural disaster and being unemployed during the pandemic was worst thing. I don’t like I have to pay back money that was giving to me because covid last year. My child checks are being reduced because I received extra money from unemployment. That’s not fair.

I am a payee representative and I heard Gov. Newsom was giving $600 stimulus payment including people on SSI.
Is this correct? If so when and how do we get the check?
Thank you

Social security made processing errors when my children were calculated on my SSDI over 4 years ago which I called and went to office when I noticed something questionable. Ended up being worker never stopped payment correctly from their father when I became disabled for SSDI. Their manual calculations under me were also done wrong which I have no way of knowing this the worker called me to tell me they failed to place them in under my earnings and were due retro payments. My older child was then over 18 she questioned it they told her YES she was entitled to it it was money to her. She used it for college expenses at the time. Now she has a child on own relocating as a first responder and in nursing school. Been saving for years. . Because their dad died of COVID they recalculated my younger child and This triggered the waiver on file for SSAs mistakes in initial calculations to not be linked with case numbers and payments to be suspended with letters they would stop for 2 years for younger child and my older daughter who received a retro payment SSA insisted she was entitled to and ended up being SSA calculation error plus SSA never even sent a decision on waiver we were told backed up. FOR 4 YEARS. she now has letters demanding payment or garnishment of her acts. Local TE worker never responds back no need to deal with this stress especially for my older child who is now a first responder and cut back to one day a week while in nursing school! Effecting her unemployment now because she’s required to test and can’t clinical if positive so her hours are cut back from job. She’s worried her savings over several years to relocate will now be disturbed for something that is a SSA employees error she should never have incurred and would have never had any way to know was incorrect to begin with !! Not SSI this is SSDI issue – pretty horrible to be doing this PLUS demanding a 5 year review 50 miles away during pandemic when the SSDI member can’t drive distances with med needed for health issue too!!
